The Demonologist by Andrew Pyper

“The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.”

Andrew Pyper’s The Demonologist is a soul capturing novel that will leave you breathless with shock and awe. The story follows David Ullman, as he drives over the majority of the upper North American continent chasing his demons – literally and figuratively – in order to save his daughter.

I have read many books with in the twenty-one years of my short life, but none have left me staring at them in amazement after reading the last words. The Demonologist is a very well written novel with twists and turns that leave your eyes running along the pages after David’s every move.  The main character himself is someone that many people relate to. To be quite honest, I fell in love with him the moment that I started reading. His wit and intelligence is a perfect companion to the horror story of his life unfolding before my eyes. His love for his daughter, as well as his interactions with her, only adds to the attraction that drew me further into this enthralling tale.

The author, Andrew Pyper, has clearly done his research into the field of biblical literature. As a Professor in the field, David Ullman can recite John Milton’s Paradise Lost as if it was written on the back of his hand. He picks apart the words to uncover the entwined meanings with the greatest of ease; using the poem and the clues left by a demon called ‘The Unnamed’ to search for his daughter whom the demon has stolen. It showed that Pyper dug deep into the field of biblical literature and – in a sense – became David himself.

Though the thought of reading a novel from the horror genre scares some people, I would still recommend reading this one. The fear and suspense that may be caused by reading this novel pales in comparison to the rush of the journey, and the hope for a happy ending. The Demonologist is a tale about terror, life, of angels and demons, and most importantly the power of the bonds that love binds people together with. With love and those bonds; we humans can do anything and defeat any evil.

“Though a host encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear.”
